The Complete Guide To SAJ Inverter Error Codes

All 51 SAJ error codes in plain English, for the R5, R6, Sununo, Suntrio and the H1 and H2 hybrids: what each one means, how urgent it is, how to reset your inverter safely, and whether it can still be repaired.

Why an SAJ error code is worth sorting now

When an SAJ shows an error code, it has usually stopped feeding power into your home. While it sits there, everything you use comes from the grid at the full retail rate, and on a hybrid the battery may stop charging as well. A few SAJ codes matter for safety as much as savings: an ISO Error or a GFCI Error means current may be leaking to earth somewhere in the solar wiring.

SAJ has been on Australian homes since about 2016, often on lower-cost installs, and it is still a current brand. Whether a fault inside the unit can be repaired depends on the fault and the part, so the honest answer is sometimes. Plenty of SAJ codes are not a broken inverter at all: a grid voltage trip, a switch left off, a meter cable or a setting that does not match the wiring.

Sorting it early usually means a shorter visit and a smaller bill, and your panels get back to work sooner. A code left to repeat for weeks tends to get worse: a damp connector corrodes, a stalled fan lets the unit cook on hot days, and the savings you were counting on slip away.

Find your code in the table below to see what it means and how urgent it is. If your home is in Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills, Gawler, the Barossa, the Fleurieu, Murray Bridge and Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, or North Brisbane, Caboolture, Bribie Island, the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie in Queensland, our own licensed electricians will go through it with you over the phone for free before anyone drives out. Check your postcode to see if we cover you.

Which SAJ inverter do you have?

The model name is printed on the label on the side of the unit. If your system is connected to SAJ's eSolar monitoring, it is listed there too.

  • R5 and R6: string inverters for solar without a battery. The R6 also comes in three-phase models.
  • Sununo Plus and Suntrio Plus: SAJ's other string inverter ranges, solar only.
  • H2: the hybrid for homes with a battery, in single-phase and three-phase models. Several can run side by side in parallel.
  • H1: the older hybrid. It numbers some faults differently from the rest, so check the model before you look up a number.

All 51 SAJ error codes, explained

An SAJ shows a fault on its display as a number and a short name, such as 31 or E031 for ISO Error. The table lists each code by its name, with the numbers each model uses in the description, because the older H1 hybrid gives the same fault a different number. Every code is below, grouped by what it relates to: the grid and mains supply, the panel input and power output, insulation and earth faults, heat and cooling fans, the unit's internal hardware, the battery, and monitoring. The number in brackets after each code's name is its source in the reference list.

  • Stop and call A safety or hardware fault that nobody can fix from a phone. Do the one safe restart at most, then call.
  • Worth a look Something to check or restart safely. If it comes back, book a visit.
  • Wait and watch The inverter has paused for a reason outside itself, usually the grid or the light, and restarts on its own.

We always err on the cautious side: when a code sits between two ratings, it gets the higher one.

Grid and mains supply error codes 8 codes

The mains grid coming into the unit: voltage, frequency and outages. Many of these are the grid, not the inverter, and clear on their own. 2 stop and call, 6 wait and watch.

Error codeWhat it meansWhat to do
Grid Voltage 10Min HighSAJ Grid Voltage 10Min High Ten-minute grid overvoltage[1][2][3][7]

The average grid voltage over the last ten minutes was above the limit, so the inverter disconnected as the Australian rules require. It reconnects itself; if it happens most days the street voltage is high and the network may need to be told. Code 15 (E015) on string and H2 units; the H1 hybrid shows it as Grid Volt.10min Warn 30.

Safe steps in the lookup
Wait and watch
Master AC SPD ErrorSAJ Master AC SPD Error Surge protector failed[5][6]

The surge protection device inside the inverter on the AC side (42) or DC side (43) has been used up, usually after a lightning strike or a big surge on the network. The inverter may keep running but is no longer protected until the device is replaced by a technician. Codes 42 and 43 on the R6 and H2. On the H1 hybrid 42 and 43 are Out Insert Err and Inv Wave Err instead.

Stop and call
Master Grid Frequency HighSAJ Master Grid Frequency High Grid frequency too high[1][2][3][4]

The grid frequency rose above the inverter's limit for a moment and it disconnected. It reconnects by itself once the grid is steady; if it keeps happening the grid standard setting needs checking. Code 18 (E018) on string and H2 units; the H1 hybrid shows it as Grid Freq.High Warn 27 or 59.

Safe steps in the lookup
Wait and watch
Master Grid Frequency LowSAJ Master Grid Frequency Low Grid frequency too low[1][2][3][4]

The grid frequency dropped below the inverter's limit for a moment and it disconnected, which can happen when the network is under strain. It reconnects by itself once the grid is steady. Code 19 (E019) on string and H2 units; the H1 hybrid shows it as Grid Freq.Low Warn 28 or 60.

Safe steps in the lookup
Wait and watch
Master Grid Phase ErrorSAJ Master Grid Phase Error Three-phase sequence wrong[1][4][6]

On a three-phase R6 or H2, the three grid phases are out of sequence or one is missing, so the inverter will not connect. This is an AC wiring matter for the installer; it is not something a restart fixes. Code 35 on the R6 and H2. On the older single-phase Sununo Plus and R5 list, 35 is Current High instead. Wiring faults need an electrician, so we treat them as a call.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master No Grid ErrorSAJ Master No Grid Error No grid detected[1][2][3][7]

The inverter cannot see mains power on its AC side. Usually the power is out, the solar supply main switch or breaker is off, or an AC connection is loose; it reconnects by itself once the grid is back. Code 24 (E024) on the R5, R6, Sununo, Suntrio and H2; the older H1 hybrid shows it as Grid Loss Warn 29 or 61, and 37 on the R6 and H2 is Master Islanding Error, the same grid-loss trip.

Safe steps in the lookup
Wait and watch
Master Phase1 Voltage HighSAJ Master Phase1 Voltage High Grid voltage too high[1][2][3][4]

The mains voltage at the inverter went above the limit it is allowed to export at, so it disconnected. It reconnects by itself; if it happens most sunny afternoons the AC cable run or the street voltage needs checking. Code 9 (E009) on the single-phase units, 9, 11 and 13 per phase on three-phase R6 and H2 units; the older H1 hybrid shows it as Grid Volt.High Warn 25 or 57.

Safe steps in the lookup
Wait and watch
Master Phase1 Voltage LowSAJ Master Phase1 Voltage Low Grid voltage too low[1][2][3][4]

The mains voltage at the inverter dropped below its limit for a moment, often during a brownout or when a large load starts nearby, and it disconnected. It reconnects by itself once the grid is steady. Code 10 (E010) on the single-phase units, 10, 12 and 14 per phase on three-phase R6 and H2 units; the H1 hybrid shows it as Grid Volt.Low Warn 26 or 58.

Panel input and power output error codes 7 codes

The DC input from the panels and the power the unit puts out: string voltage, low light, overloads and output limits. 6 stop and call, 1 worth a look.

Error codeWhat it meansWhat to do
DC ReverseConnect ErrorSAJ DC ReverseConnect Error DC wiring reversed[1]

On the H2 hybrid, a PV string or the battery is connected the wrong way round at the inverter. This is a wiring fault that must be corrected by an electrician; do not keep restarting it. Code 25 on the H2. On the older Sununo and R5 list the same number family (24 to 26) is grid loss on the Suntrio three-phase units.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Inv Wave ErrSAJ Inv Wave Err Output stage fault (H1)[2]

On the older H1 hybrid, the inverter's output waveform is wrong (43), the output is connected where it should not be (42), or the battery charging bridge current is out of range (47, 48). These are faults inside the unit or in its wiring and need a technician; do not keep restarting it. On the H2 and R6, 42 and 43 are the AC and DC surge protector errors instead.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master HW PV Current HighSAJ Master HW PV Current High Panel current too high[1][2][3][4]

The inverter measured more current from a string than it allows. SAJ's H2 manual says the usual cause is a string connected the wrong way round, otherwise damage inside the unit. Code 39 (E039), with 40 for PV2 on the older single-phase list; 88 (E088), SW PV Current High, is the same trip caught by software. The H1 hybrid lists them as 14, 15, 21 and 22. A repeat needs an electrician.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master OffGrid Voltage LowSAJ Master OffGrid Voltage Low Backup output voltage low[1][2][5]

During a blackout the backup (off-grid) output voltage sagged because the appliances on it draw more than the battery can supply, the battery is nearly flat, or the battery is too hot or cold to give full power. Switch off heavy appliances and let the battery charge. Code 16 on the H2; the H1 hybrid shows it as Out Volt.Low Warn 32, where 32 on the H2 is Bus Voltage Balance Error. Heat shutdowns point at a failing fan, a blocked vent or a bad installation spot, so we treat them as a call.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master Output OverLoadSAJ Master Output OverLoad Backup circuit overloaded[1][2][5]

The appliances on the backup circuit are drawing more than the H2 can supply (94, Output OverLoad) or more than the battery can give because it is nearly flat (92, Battery OverLoad), often an air conditioner, oven or pump starting together. Switch off the heavy appliances and let the battery charge. The H1 hybrid lists it as 18 and 31, where 31 on the string units is ISO Error. Insulation faults are a safety fault, so we treat them as a call.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master Output_ShorterSAJ Master Output_Shorter Backup circuit short circuit[1][2][5]

The inverter detected a short circuit on the backup (off-grid) output, which means a fault in the wiring or an appliance on that circuit. Do not keep restarting it; the backup wiring needs an electrician. Code 17 on the H2. On the H1 hybrid, 17 is Inv Short Err, the same family.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master PV Voltage High ErrorSAJ Master PV Voltage High Error Panel voltage out of range[1][2][3][4]

The voltage from the panels is above what the inverter accepts, usually too many panels in one string, which shows up most on cold clear mornings. The string design needs checking by an electrician. Code 36 (E036) on the R6 and H2, 76 and 77 (PV1 and PV2) on the Sununo Plus, Suntrio Plus and R5, 19 and 20 on the H1 hybrid.

Panels, insulation and earth faults error codes 5 codes

Insulation, earth and leakage faults on the solar panel side. These are safety faults: live DC wiring may be leaking to earth somewhere on the roof. 5 stop and call.

Error codeWhat it meansWhat to do
GFCI Device ErrorSAJ GFCI Device Error Leakage current sensor fault[1][2][3][4]

The inverter's own leakage-current sensing circuit failed its self-check, as opposed to finding a real leak. If one restart does not clear it the board inside has failed. Code 6 (E006) on the R5, R6, Sununo, Suntrio and H2; the H1 hybrid lists it as 02, where 2 on the string units is EEPROM Error. Code 8 (E008), Current Sensor Error, is the same kind of failed self-check on the current circuit.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
GFCI ErrorSAJ GFCI Error Residual current trip[1][2][3][4]

The inverter measured current leaking to earth from the solar or AC wiring, usually damaged cable insulation, water in a connector or on the panels, or a poor AC earth. Because this is a safety trip, a repeat needs an electrician. Code 27 (E027) on the R5, R6, Sununo, Suntrio and H2; the older H1 hybrid shows it as GFCI Err 11, where 11 on three-phase R6 and H2 units is Phase 2 Voltage High.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
ISO ErrorSAJ ISO Error Panel insulation fault[1][2][3][4][8]

The inverter found too little insulation between the solar wiring and earth, usually water in a connector or isolator, a chafed cable or a damaged panel. Morning alarms that clear by midday point to dew; one that stays is a safety issue for an electrician. Code 31 (E031) on the R5, R6, Sununo, Suntrio and H2; the older H1 hybrid shows it as ISO Err 06, where 6 on string units is GFCI Device Error.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master Arc ErrorSAJ Master Arc Error Arc fault[1][3][5][6]

The inverter detected the signature of a DC arc on the solar wiring (87), which SAJ says comes from a short circuit or a poor terminal contact, and it shut down to prevent a fire. Do not restart it until an electrician has inspected the DC connectors. Codes 83 (E083), Arc Device Error, and 55 or 57, AFCI Lost, mean the arc detection circuit itself has failed and also need a technician.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master Grid NE Voltage ErrorSAJ Master Grid NE Voltage Error Neutral to earth voltage fault[1][2][3][7]

The inverter measured more than about 10 volts between neutral and earth at its AC terminals, which usually means the earth connection is missing or poor, or active and neutral are swapped. This is an AC wiring fault for an electrician; do not keep restarting it. Code 44 (E044) on the R5, R6, Sununo and H2; the H1 hybrid shows the same family as GND loss Warn 52 and LN Wrong Warn 53.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call

Heat and cooling fans error codes 3 codes

Over-temperature, heat derating and the cooling fans. Heat faults are taken seriously: a unit that cannot cool itself can be a fire risk. 2 stop and call, 1 worth a look.

Error codeWhat it meansWhat to do
Master Fan1 ErrorSAJ Master Fan1 Error Cooling fan fault[1][2][3][7]

A cooling fan on the inverter has stopped or is jammed, often by dust, leaves or a nest. The inverter may keep running but will overheat on hot days until the fan is cleared or replaced. Code 45 (E045), with 46 to 48 for the other fans on larger R6 and H2 units; the H1 hybrid lists it as 03 and 35, where 3 on the other units is Temperature High. Heat shutdowns point at a failing fan, a blocked vent or a bad installation spot, so we treat them as a call.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master Temperature High ErrorSAJ Master Temperature High Error Inverter too hot[1][2][3][4]

The inverter's temperature went over its limit, so it cut back or stopped. Usually it is mounted in direct sun, in a hot closed space, or its heatsink is blocked; it comes back once it cools, but if it happens on ordinary days the mounting spot or fan needs a look. Code 3 (E003) on string and H2 units; the H1 hybrid lists it as Temp.High Err 07, where 7 on the others is DCI Device Error. Heat shutdowns point at a failing fan, a blocked vent or a bad installation spot, so we treat them as a call.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master Temperature Low ErrorSAJ Master Temperature Low Error Inverter too cold[1][2][3][4]

The inverter's internal temperature is below the point it will run at, which only happens on very cold mornings or in an unheated shed. It starts itself once the day warms up. Code 4 (E004) on string and H2 units; the H1 hybrid lists it as Temp.Low Err 08. If it shows on a mild day the temperature sensor is suspect.

Internal hardware and safety checks error codes 12 codes

The unit's own electronics: relays, sensors, the DC bus, memory and its self-checks. Nearly all of these need an electrician. 10 stop and call, 2 worth a look.

Error codeWhat it meansWhat to do
DCI Device ErrorSAJ DCI Device Error DC injection sensor fault[1][2][3][4]

The circuit that checks how much DC the inverter lets into its AC output has failed its self-check. One restart may clear it; if it comes back the board inside has a fault. Code 7 (E007) on the R5, R6, Sununo, Suntrio and H2; the older H1 hybrid lists it as DCI Err 12, where 12 on the three-phase R6 and H2 is Phase 2 Voltage Low instead.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
DRM0 ErrorSAJ DRM0 Error Demand response shutdown[1][2][3][4]

The inverter's demand response (DRM) port, which Australian rules require, has received the DRM0 signal to disconnect, or its plug or link has been pulled out so the inverter thinks it has. Nothing is wrong with the inverter itself; the DRM wiring or plug needs the installer. Code 86 (E086) on every SAJ list, 92 on the H1 hybrid; 78 on the H2 is a similar external disconnect command.

Safe steps in the lookup
Worth a look
Lost Communication between Master and MeterSAJ Lost Communication between Master and Meter Meter or CT not responding[1][2][3][4][5]

The inverter has lost contact with the energy meter or CT clamp it uses for export limiting and the home-use display, so the app shows wrong grid figures and the export limit may hold back production. The meter wiring or settings need the installer. Code 49 (E049) for the main meter, 51 (E051) grid meter and 59 PV meter on the H2; 56 on the H2 is CT Device Err; the H1 shows Meter Lost Com Warn 91.

Safe steps in the lookup
Worth a look
Lost Communication M<->SSAJ Lost Communication M<->S Internal communication fault[1][2][3][4][6]

The boards inside the inverter have stopped talking to each other: master to slave processor (5, 50), or display board to control board (81, 56, 72, and 65 on the H1). Not the wifi or app link. It can recover with one restart; if it comes back a board or ribbon cable needs a technician. The H1 hybrid also lists it as 05, 11 and 37, where 11 on three-phase units is a grid voltage code.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master Bus Voltage HighSAJ Master Bus Voltage High Internal DC bus too high[1][2][3][4]

The voltage on the inverter's internal DC bus went above its limit. SAJ points first at the string design: too many panels in series pushes the voltage past the inverter's maximum on cold mornings. If the strings are right, it is a fault inside the unit. Code 33 (E033); 32 (E032) Bus Voltage Balance Error is the two halves of the bus out of step. The H1 hybrid lists bus high as 09 and 39.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master Bus Voltage LowSAJ Master Bus Voltage Low Internal DC bus too low[1][2][3][4]

The voltage on the inverter's internal DC bus dropped below where it can run, often at dawn or dusk when the panels cannot hold it, or when a battery sags under a heavy backup load. SAJ's fix is a five-minute restart; if it shows in full sun the inverter needs testing. Code 34 (E034) on string and H2 units; the H1 hybrid lists it as 10, and its Bus SoftTimeOut Err 36 is the bus failing to charge.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master EEPROM ErrorSAJ Master EEPROM Error Memory fault[1][2][3][4]

The inverter's settings memory failed its check on the control board (Master EEPROM Error) or the display board (HMI EEPROM Error). One restart often clears it and SAJ suggests checking the firmware is current; a repeat is a board fault. Code 2 (E002) on string and H2 units, 04 on the H1 hybrid. HMI EEPROM Error is 51 on the three-phase R6, 52 (E052) on the H2 and single-phase R6, 66 on the H1. Internal and hardware faults need testing with the right instruments, so we treat them as a call.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master HW Bus Voltage HighSAJ Master HW Bus Voltage High Internal DC bus fault (hardware)[1][2][3][4]

The inverter's hardware protection tripped because the internal DC bus went well over its limit, usually a string with too many panels in series or a fault inside the unit. Code 38 (E038) on string and H2 units; the H1 hybrid lists it as 13, where 13 on the three-phase units is Phase 3 Voltage High. If one restart does not clear it the power board needs a technician.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master HW Inv Current HighSAJ Master HW Inv Current High Output overcurrent (hardware)[1][2][3][4]

The inverter's hardware protection tripped on a large surge of output current, often a loose AC connection or a grid disturbance. Code 41 (E041) on string and H2 units; the Sununo Plus and R5 also have 35, Current High, for the software version, and the H1 hybrid lists 16, 17 (short circuit) and 23. SAJ's step is to check the AC cables are secure, then restart once; a repeat needs a technician.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master Relay ErrorSAJ Master Relay Error Grid relay fault[1][2][3][4]

The relays that connect the inverter to the grid failed their self-test. SAJ's H2 manual says the cause can be a live wire earthed on the grid side, very low grid voltage, or the relay circuit itself. A restart may clear a one-off; a repeat means the relay has failed and the inverter needs a technician. Code 1 (E001) on every SAJ list, including the H1 hybrid.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master Self-Test FailedSAJ Master Self-Test Failed Grid protection self-test failed[4][5][6]

The inverter ran its grid protection self-test (the over and under voltage and frequency trip timing) and failed, so it will not feed the grid until the test passes. This is a settings or firmware matter for the installer, or a fault in the protection circuit. Code 40 on the R6 and H2. On the Sununo Plus and R5 list, 40 is HW PV2 Current High instead. A failed self-test means the inverter cannot prove its own protection works, so we treat it as a call.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Phase1 DCI ErrorSAJ Phase1 DCI Error DC injection too high[1][3][4]

The inverter is letting a small amount of DC into its AC output, which the grid rules do not allow, so it disconnected. A one-off usually clears after a wait or one restart; if it keeps coming back the output stage or its sensor needs testing. Code 28 (E028), with 29 and 30 for the other phases; 21 to 23, DCV Error, is the same check on the output voltage. On the H1, 28 is Grid Freq.Low Warn. DC on the AC side is a protection fault, so we treat it as a call.

Battery error codes 13 codes

The battery, its management system and its state of charge. These only appear on systems with a battery connected. 8 stop and call, 4 worth a look, 1 wait and watch.

Error codeWhat it meansWhat to do
Authority expiresSAJ Authority expires Activation expired[1][6]

The inverter's authorisation period has run out and it has stopped or limited output. This is an administrative lock set through the distributor, not a hardware fault; the installer or SAJ service needs to renew it. Code 85 on the R6 and H2. On the H1 hybrid, 85 is BMS DCHG Curr.H Warn instead. Internal and hardware faults need testing with the right instruments, so we treat them as a call.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
BATInputMode ErrorSAJ BATInputMode Error Battery input mode setting wrong[1]

On the H2 hybrid, the setting for how the batteries are connected (single or parallel input) does not match the wiring, or one of the paralleled battery connections is loose. This is a settings and wiring matter for the installer. Code 20 on the H2; on the H1 hybrid 20 is PV2 Volt.High Err instead.

Safe steps in the lookup
Worth a look
BMS CHG TempH WarnSAJ BMS CHG TempH Warn Battery too hot[2]

On the older H1 hybrid, the battery reports it is too hot to charge (87) or discharge (86) safely, so the inverter has paused it. It clears once the battery cools; if it happens on mild days the battery's location or cooling needs a look. On the H2 and R6, 86 and 87 are DRM0 Error and Master Arc Error instead. Heat shutdowns point at a failing fan, a blocked vent or a bad installation spot, so we treat them as a call.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
BMS Device ErrorSAJ BMS Device Error Battery reports a fault[1][2][6]

The battery's management system has reported an internal problem to the inverter. On SAJ battery stacks, 97 and 98 mean the packs are not talking to each other, usually a missing terminator on the last pack or a wrong communication cable. Code 54 on the H2 (52 on the three-phase R6), 68 on the H1 hybrid. The battery needs a look from the installer. Internal and hardware faults need testing with the right instruments, so we treat them as a call.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
BMS Lost.Conn WarnSAJ BMS Lost.Conn Warn Battery not communicating[1][2][5][6]

The inverter cannot talk to the battery's management system (BMS), so it will not charge or discharge until contact is back. SAJ says the usual cause is the battery not switched on or not started properly; otherwise the communication cable between the battery and inverter needs checking. Code 55 on the H2 (53 on the three-phase R6 list); the H1 hybrid lists it as 51 and 89.

Safe steps in the lookup
Worth a look
Bus Volt.Consis ErrSAJ Bus Volt.Consis Err Measurements do not agree[2][4][7][8]

The inverter's two processors each measure the grid voltage, frequency, leakage current or bus voltage, and their readings do not agree, so it stops. One restart may clear it; a repeat means a measuring circuit has failed. Codes 51, 54 and 57 on the Sununo Plus, Suntrio Plus and R5; 41, 44, 46, 49 and 50 on the H1, where 51 to 57 on the H2 are battery and meter codes.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
DCDC Device ErrorSAJ DCDC Device Error Battery converter unit fault[1]

The separate DC-to-DC unit that sits between an H2 and its battery has stopped talking to the inverter (69) or reported a fault of its own (70). SAJ's advice for both is to contact the installer. Codes 69 and 70 on the H2; on the H1 hybrid 70 is not used.

Safe steps in the lookup
Worth a look
ForbidCharge WarnSAJ ForbidCharge Warn Battery asked to pause charging[2]

On the older H1 hybrid, the battery's management system has told the inverter not to charge (54), not to discharge (55) or to force a charge (56), usually because the battery is full, flat, or too hot or cold. This is the battery protecting itself and normally clears on its own. The same numbers on the H2 are BMS Device Error, BMS Lost.Conn and CT Device Err.

Safe steps in the lookup
Worth a look
Master Battery Current HighSAJ Master Battery Current High Battery current too high[1][2][5]

More current flowed to or from the battery than it allows for a moment, usually a heavy backup load on a battery that is already low. SAJ's steps are to reduce the backup load and let the battery charge; if it repeats with normal loads the battery and its settings need checking. Code 90 on the H2 (99 and 100 are the pack's own overcurrent protections); the H1 lists the BMS warnings as 83 and 85. Over-voltage, over-current and short-circuit faults can damage hardware, so we treat them as a call.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master Battery Discharge Voltage LowSAJ Master Battery Discharge Voltage Low Battery too flat[1][2][5]

The battery has reached its minimum charge, or its voltage dropped too low under a heavy backup load, so the inverter stopped drawing from it to protect it. This is normal protection, not a fault: it clears once the sun or the grid recharges the battery. Code 96 on the H2 (101 and 103 are the battery pack's own low-voltage protections); the H1 hybrid shows it as 63, 64, 82 or 88.

Safe steps in the lookup
Wait and watch
Master Battery Open Circuit ErrorSAJ Master Battery Open Circuit Error Battery not detected[1][2][5]

The inverter cannot see any voltage from the battery, which usually means the battery breaker or switch is off or a battery cable is loose. Code 95 on the H2; the H1 hybrid shows it as Battery Open Warn 62, and its 33, Bat Input Short Err, is the opposite fault, a short on the battery input, which needs an electrician. Over-voltage, over-current and short-circuit faults can damage hardware, so we treat them as a call.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master Battery SoftConnect TimeOutSAJ Master Battery SoftConnect TimeOut Battery pre-charge failed[1][5]

The inverter tried to connect the battery gently (pre-charging its internal bus) and timed out, which points to the battery relay, the pre-charge circuit or a battery that will not close its contactor. SAJ's advice is to contact the installer or SAJ service. Code 93 on the H2.

Safe steps in the lookup
Stop and call
Master Battery Voltage HighSAJ Master Battery Voltage High Battery voltage too high[1][2][5]

The battery voltage is above what the inverter is set for (89), or rose too high while charging (91), which SAJ says can happen if the battery is switched off mid-charge. On the H1 hybrid the same family is 34 and the BMS cell-high warning 81. Let it settle, do not switch the battery off while charging, and have the battery type and charge settings checked if it repeats. Battery protection faults are not something to ride out at home, so we treat them as a call.

Monitoring, communication and settings error codes 3 codes

Monitoring, Wi-Fi, meters, communication between parts of the system, settings and firmware. Usually not a hardware fault, but the system may stop reporting. 3 worth a look.

Error codeWhat it meansWhat to do
HMI RTC ErrorSAJ HMI RTC Error Display clock fault[1][2][3]

The clock on the inverter's display board has lost its time or failed, so time-of-use schedules and the daily graphs can be wrong. SAJ's advice is to contact the installer; it is usually fixed by setting the time or replacing the display board. Code 53 (E053) on the H2 and R6 single-phase, 52 on the R6 three-phase, 67 on the H1 hybrid.

Master PV Mode ErrorSAJ Master PV Mode Error PV input mode setting wrong[1][3][5][6]

The inverter's setting for how the strings are connected (independent or paralleled inputs) does not match the wiring, so it refuses to run or runs badly. This is a settings matter for the installer. Code 84 (E084) on the H2 and R6 single-phase, 68 and 74 (PVInputModeFault) on the R6 and H2 three-phase units.

Parallel CAN Com ErrorSAJ Parallel CAN Com Error Parallel inverter communication lost[1]

On a site with more than one H2 running in parallel, the units have lost contact with each other over the CAN cable, or the number of online units does not match the setting. The parallel cable, the slave ID settings and the termination need checking by the installer. Codes 26 and 71 on the H2.

Got an SAJ error code? Free phone diagnosis in our service area

Our own licensed electricians cover Greater Adelaide and regional SA, and from North Brisbane up through the Sunshine Coast to Gympie. Check your postcode, then read us the code and tell us the install year. If it needs a visit, the callout is credited against the work.

How to reset an SAJ inverter safely

For most SAJ codes, one restart is the most you should try, in this order:

  1. Switch the solar supply main switch off at the switchboard.
  2. Switch the DC isolator off at the inverter.
  3. Wait five minutes.
  4. Switch the DC isolator back on, then the solar supply main switch.

On an H1 or H2 hybrid, many battery codes need no restart at all. Wait for the battery to recharge from solar or the grid, and during a blackout switch off heavy appliances on the backup circuit. Never open the unit or touch the wiring, including the battery cables. Never restart anything that smells hot or shows scorch marks. If the code comes back after one restart, stop and call.

SAJ inverter repair or replacement?

When we visit, we test the whole system before we blame the inverter: insulation resistance on every string, earth continuity, the grid relay, DC string voltages and currents, the AC supply and the fault log stored in the unit. On a hybrid we check the battery and its communication link too. A Master Relay Error can come from the grid side rather than the relay itself, and an ISO Error is often a wet connector on the roof, which is a repair whatever brand is on the wall.

Whether an SAJ fault inside the unit is worth repairing depends on the fault and on whether the part can be had. If it can, we quote the repair. If it cannot, we quote a straight replacement and a hybrid option side by side, so a home with an R5, R6 or Sununo can add a battery now or later. The callout fee is credited against whichever you go ahead with.

We do this work in Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills, Gawler, the Barossa, the Fleurieu, Murray Bridge and Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, or North Brisbane, Caboolture, Bribie Island, the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie in Queensland only. Outside those areas, everything above still applies: take the code, its meaning and the urgency to a licensed electrician near you.

Where these SAJ error codes come from

Every SAJ code on this page was read from the maker's own manual wherever one survives (98 per cent of them). Where only a secondary copy survives, the row says "best effort" and so does the lookup. The numbers match the references in the code table.

SAJ error code questions, answered

How do I read an SAJ error code?

Look at the display for the number and the words beside it. The number names the fault, but the H1 hybrid and the newer models do not always use the same number for the same thing, so go by the words where you can and check your model on the label. Type either the number or a word from the name into the search box above and the matching rows come up.

What does SAJ Master Phase1 Voltage High mean?

Master Phase1 Voltage High is “grid voltage too high”. We rate it wait and watch. See it in the table.

What does SAJ ISO Error mean?

ISO Error is “panel insulation fault”. We rate it stop and call. See it in the table.

Do you cover my area?

We work in Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills, Gawler, the Barossa, the Fleurieu, Murray Bridge and Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, or North Brisbane, Caboolture, Bribie Island, the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie in Queensland. Check your postcode to be sure. Outside those areas, this page still tells you what your code means and how urgent it is, and a licensed electrician near you can take it from there.

What does it cost to have an SAJ looked at?

For homes in our service area, the phone diagnosis is free. If it needs a visit, there is a callout fee, and it is credited against any repair or replacement we do.

Will you work on an SAJ you did not install?

Yes, if it is in our service area. Most of our repair work is on systems someone else installed. We test the whole system, not just the unit on the wall.

Why does my SAJ say Authority expires?

The inverter’s activation period has run out, so it has stopped or limited its output. It is an administrative lock rather than a hardware fault, and it has to be renewed by the installer or SAJ’s service team. If you are in our service area, talk to us first and we will tell you where it needs to go.

Is an SAJ inverter worth repairing?

Sometimes. A fan, a setting, a meter cable or a fault on the roof side is usually worth fixing. A failed board inside an older unit often is not. We tell you which on the phone, and if a visit shows a repair is not worth it, we price a replacement beside it so you can compare.

Where do the codes on this page come from?

From SAJ’s own user manuals for the R5, R6, Sununo Plus, Suntrio Plus, H1 and H2, read side by side so each row shows the number every model uses. One row relies on a secondary copy and is marked best effort. Each code in the table carries a numbered reference to its document in the source list.
