How the solar rebate works

Back to the calculator

The "solar rebate" is the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Every eligible system earns Small-scale Technology Certificates, your installer sells them and takes their value off the quote. How many you get depends on where you live, how many kilowatts of panels go on the roof, and the year of the install, because the scheme winds down one year at a time until the end of 2030. The calculator above uses the Clean Energy Regulator's own zone ratings and deeming rules, so the certificate count matches what a real quote should show.

  1. 1You install an eligible systemApproved panels and inverter, put in by an accredited installer. The system is credited with certificates, one for every megawatt hour it is deemed to produce.
  2. 2Your installer sells the certificatesThey trade on a market under a $40 cap. The installer takes their value off your quote, so you pay the net price and never apply for anything.
  3. 3The scheme winds down to 2030Each January the deeming period loses a year, so the same system earns fewer certificates the longer you wait. It ends on 31 December 2030.

What sets your number

Where you live Four zones by sunshine, each with a rating per kilowatt. Adelaide, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast are all Zone 3.
How much solar Certificates scale with panel capacity. Those bars are Zone 3 in 2026: double the panels, double the certificates.
When it goes in Years of production credited up front: five for a 2026 install, down to one in 2030, the scheme's last year.

Who qualifies

  • Any home, not means tested. Owner-occupied or rented, new build or existing, no income test.
  • Approved, new equipment. Panels and inverter on the Clean Energy Council lists, not second-hand.
  • Accredited installer. Designed and installed by an SAA-accredited electrician, to Australian Standards. Deionno is an accredited installer, so every system we put in qualifies.
  • 100 kW or under. Anything larger is usually a commercial system (a factory or warehouse roof, not a house) and sits in a different scheme that earns certificates year by year.
