How the federal battery rebate works

Back to the calculator

The federal battery rebate started on 1 July 2025 and works like the solar rebate: an eligible home battery earns Small-scale Technology Certificates on its usable capacity, and the installer takes their value off the price at the point of sale. The factor per kilowatt hour drops every six months, and since 1 May 2026 it steps down on capacity above 14 kWh, so the size you choose and the month it goes in both change the number. The calculator above uses the Clean Energy Regulator's current factors and tiers.

  1. 1An eligible battery goes in with solarAn approved, VPP-capable battery of 5 to 100 kWh, connected to new or existing panels by an accredited installer. It is credited with certificates on its usable capacity.
  2. 2The discount comes off at the point of saleYour installer claims the certificates and takes their value off the quote. You pay the net price. No form, no waiting, no cheque later.
  3. 3The factor steps down every six monthsIt started at 9.3 certificates per kWh in 2025 and falls on a set schedule to 2.1 by the end of 2030. The install date, not the order date, sets the rate.

What sets your number

How big the battery is Usable kilowatt hours, in bands. The first 14 kWh earns the full factor, the next 14 earns 60 percent, up to 50 earns 15 percent, and anything above that earns nothing.
When it goes in The factor per usable kWh on the Regulator's schedule. The highlighted bar is where we are now.
Solar on the roof The battery has to be paired with a solar system. Existing panels are fine; new panels earn the solar rebate as well, so both discounts come off the one quote.

Who qualifies

  • Any home, not means tested. Owner-occupied or rented, with new or existing solar.
  • Approved battery, 5 to 100 kWh. Nominal (label) capacity of 5 up to and including 100 kWh, on the Clean Energy Council list; only the first 50 kWh of usable capacity earns certificates.
  • VPP-capable. Able to join a virtual power plant. You do not have to join one.
  • Accredited installer, once per property. Deionno is an accredited installer, so every battery we put in qualifies. One battery rebate per address, claimed once; an existing battery can be expanded if it has not been claimed.
